Tips for Maintaining Healthy Hair

Once you’ve experienced the benefits of having your hair restored, you want to take care of it so that it remains as healthy as possible. For the most part, maintaining healthy hair after successful restoration is the same as maintaining hair that hasn’t been restored — with a few additions.
At NeoGraft Hair Restoration in Westport, Connecticut, Dana Brownell, MD, and our staff want every patient to enjoy many years of healthy, full hair after having a successful hair restoration procedure. In most instances, there’s no reason that can’t happen. Your follicles may produce less hair over time, but they should continue to grow hair, giving you the task of caring for it.
The basics of caring for your hair
Caring for your hair after a restoration procedure is important. Keep it clean. If you have an oily scalp, this means washing more frequently, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association. When you shampoo your hair, concentrate on your scalp, rather than focusing on the strands of your hair.
Use conditioner with each wash, or use a two-in-one shampoo that conditions while you wash. With conditioner, concentrate on the tips of your hair, instead of along the length or on your scalp. This helps keep your hair from looking limp.
Protect your hair from the environment when necessary. If you’re going to be in the sun, wear a hat. If you’re swimming in a pool with chlorine, wear a swim cap and make sure to wash and deep condition afterward.
Keep in mind that wet hair is more fragile than dry hair. Use a towel gently and carefully to avoid breakage.
You should also get trims as usual, and avoid harsh chemicals to style your hair.

Dr. Brownell may suggest specific products for your hair care. She also may recommend that you take medication to prevent hair loss.
Hair loss and thinning can continue after hair restoration, though it won’t be in the same pattern as before. If Dr. Brownell suggests medication, her goal is to help you keep as much of your hair for as long as possible.
Your hair restoration should last for many years, and keeping your new hair healthy isn’t difficult with a bit of care and attention.
