How Does PRP Therapy Promote Hair Regrowth?

How Does PRP Therapy Promote Hair Regrowth?

Deciding to undergo hair restoration means you’ve chosen to invest time and money in your appearance. You may have made this decision for an array of reasons, but one thing is certain: You want to do everything you can to make sure your procedure is successful.

Dr. Dana Brownell and the dedicated staff at NeoGraft Hair Restoration in Westport, Connecticut, want to help you reach your goals. We firmly believe that hair restoration using follicular unit extraction (FUE) is the best way to get a natural and full look, whether you’re working to restore the hair on your head, your eyebrows, or your facial hair

Sometimes, Dr. Brownell suggests platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to help make sure your hair restoration is successful.

PRP basics

PRP injections have been around for quite some time, and doctors often used them in orthopedic applications — such as with chronic conditions like arthritis — before the therapy became more common for cosmetic treatments.

Your blood is made up of various components: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Plasma is largely made up of water and various proteins. Platelets are a specialized type of cell that help your blood clot when you’re injured and also help you heal by releasing growth factors that encourage cell regrowth and renewal.

When you have PRP injections, the first step is having a small amount of blood drawn and processed in a centrifuge, which separates the platelets from the other components of your blood. Your provider then injects your platelets concentrated in a small amount of your plasma into the treatment area to infuse the area with growth factors.

At NeoGraft Hair Restoration, that means your scalp, brows, or your face, depending on where you want hair to grow. The platelets get to work, helping your cells repair and renew. The process also triggers your body’s immune system and tells it to start healing.

PRP and hair restoration

Dr. Brownell performs FUE hair restoration, which involves moving individual hair follicles from a donor area, such as the back of your head, to the area where you want hair to grow. Using the NeoGraft technique allows Dr. Brownell to perform transplants quickly and with extreme precision.

Combining FUE hair restoration with PRP injections gives you the best of two worlds. The newly relocated hair follicles continue to produce hair where you want it, and the platelets help the hair follicles become established. PRP may also help stimulate the hair follicles that have stopped growing hair to begin functioning again.

In one small study, researchers looked at 40 patients who had FUE hair transplants. They were assigned to two groups, one that also received PRP injections and one that didn’t. The researchers then evaluated the participants after two weeks, four weeks, eight weeks, three months, and six months.

The group that had PRP injections had more hair regrowth, more hair density, and lengthier hair after six months compared to the group that didn’t have PRP injections. The researchers concluded that PRP injections can lead to greater density and faster recovery in combination with FUE hair restoration.
