Does a Facial Hair Transplant Look Natural?

Facial hair transplantation is an increasingly popular procedure, and for good reason. Men who are unhappy with their facial hair now have a solution. Feeling great about how you look can change how you present yourself to the world; having more confidence translates to more success professionally, socially, and personally.

Dr. Dana Brownell and her staff at NeoGraft Hair Restoration in Westport, Connecticut, understand that having a full beard is important for many men for different reasons. We’re pleased to offer facial hair transplants for men who would like to enjoy thicker, fuller facial hair.

Facial hair transplant basics

A facial hair transplant works just like a procedure to address hair loss works. The difference, of course, is the site where we implant the follicles.

At NeoGraft Hair Restoration, we use a specialized technique that involves harvesting hair follicles from an area where you have plenty of hair, such as the back of your head, and implanting them in the area you’d like hair to grow — in this instance, on your face.

The NeoGraft® system is considered the gold standard in hair transplantation. It’s a follicular unit extraction (FUE) method, but the procedure is performed robotically so it’s much faster than when it’s performed manually.

Once the follicles are extracted, they’re implanted precisely where you want hair to grow. Dr. Brownell’s expertise means that your transplanted facial hair will look as though it’s always been there, as she places each follicle carefully to create a very natural pattern.

Will a facial hair transplant hurt?

Facial hair transplantation is a minimally invasive and safe procedure. We provide a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during the transplant. Afterward you may experience a bit of swelling or redness, and in the days following the procedure, you may have some skin flaking around where the follicles were implanted.

One of the things our patients are often surprised to learn is that you can return to your regular routine right away after a facial hair transplant. You need to avoid some activities like swimming or exposure to direct sunlight, but for the most part, you can do what you normally do.

Results of your facial hair transplant

You can immediately see the results of your facial hair transplantation, so you can truly envision your natural-looking results. However, it’s normal for those newly transplanted hairs to shed in the following weeks — the transplantation process is stressful to your follicles, and all hair follicles normally cycle through phases of shedding, resting, and growing.

After about 3-4 months, your transplanted facial hair will begin growing again, and within 6-8 months, you’ll be able to enjoy the full results of your facial hair transplant. You treat your new beard exactly as you would treat natural hair growth — shave, trim, wash, and whatever else you want to do.
